Mission Moment Monday is a weekly blog post meant to give your family practical ways to cultivate Family Missions.
Mark 12:30-31 tells us our greatest mission: “And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
God commands us to love others, but as we know, we are not hard wired for generosity and selflessness. If you have children, you understand a little more just how deep the selfishness is rooted. “MINE!” is a word that we as parents hear often. So, how can we be a missional family that loves others as God commands us to?
One way I try to teach my 2 older children (ages 4 and 2) to love others is by constantly asking them the question, “What is our mission?” to which they reply, “Love people!” Whether we are going to the grocery store, the library, or a friend's house, we are looking for opportunities to love others. When we get in the car to go I ask them this question and then we talk about specific ways we can accomplish the mission of loving people. Smiling at the cashier, thanking the librarian, hugging a friend that is sad, praying for someone in need, and sharing toys are just some of the ways our family has come up with to live out Mark 12:31.
Once we are in the car to come home, we talk about the ways they were able to love others and how it made those people feel. We talk about how it made them feel to love others. We discuss how God is pleased when we love His creation who are made in His image.
Let your errands and outings this week become opportunities to love people around you and live the mission with your family.
"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." John 13:34-35
